Scale

Scale is a reference to measure. Light has 'scale' in two ways. It possesses both its own individual scale and also the ability to alter the scale of form and space.

When considering light in an architectural context we may judge its scale through the size of the source, the amount of light present and the manner in which forms and their surfaces are revealed. Light provides the means by which to both appreciate and maintain an appropriate sense of scale within any given space. It is possible to alter the perceived scale of space through the careful illumination of both vertical and horizontal surfaces.

It is difficult to interpret the built environment unless we comprehend its size. Light is the means by which the perceived scale of our world may be clearly understood.
